What does a deck need underneath?
A deck needs a level, drained base and a substructure sized to the span. The boards sit on a frame, so the frame and the base decide how firm the deck feels and how long it stays in order. The base differs from one surface to the next.
- Concrete slab: the slab is checked for levels and falls, and the substructure sits on supports that keep the frame clear of standing water
- Tiled terrace: the existing falls are kept so water still reaches the drain, and the frame is fixed without blocking it
- Rooftop or balcony: the load, the waterproofing and the drainage are checked first, and the substructure is laid out to protect the surface below
- Ground: the ground is cleared, levelled and prepared with a firm base before the frame goes in
