Interlock paving is a surface of concrete blocks laid in a pattern on a compacted base and a bed of sand. The blocks lock together through the joints, so the surface carries foot traffic evenly and drains through the fall we set. How is interlock paving built?
Interlock paving is built from the ground up. The levels and the drainage fall are set first, a compacted base carries the load, a sand bed holds the blocks, and edge restraint and filled joints keep them locked together.
The base, levels and drainage
The base decides how long the surface stays even. We survey the levels and set the fall so water runs away from the villa, the pool and the planting. We excavate to the depth the use requires, then compact the base in layers. A weak or uneven base is the main reason paving sinks.
Blocks, thickness and colour
Blocks differ in thickness, colour and shape. Foot traffic and vehicle loads need different blocks and bases, so the use decides the thickness. Colour matters in Dubai sun: lighter blocks stay cooler underfoot than darker blocks. Pattern changes the look and the amount of cutting.
Laying, edges and joints
The blocks are laid on a levelled sand bed in the chosen pattern. Edge restraint holds the outer blocks in place, so the surface cannot spread. We cut the blocks to fit around corners, drains and planting beds. Fine sand is swept into the joints and the surface is compacted, so the blocks lock together.

How long does interlock installation take?
The time depends on the area, the pattern, the ground, the supply of the blocks and the coordination with other landscape works. As a market guide, laying a typical garden area takes about 1 to 2 days once the base is ready, and larger areas take longer. We confirm the timeline in your written quote.
Four things set the length of a job:
- Area and pattern: a larger area and a complex pattern take longer to lay and cut
- Ground and old surface: hard ground and an existing surface to remove add time before laying
- Supply of blocks: the blocks are ready on site before the base is finished
- Access and coordination: in a new landscape, the paving follows the pipework and the levels of the other works

Is interlock paving better than concrete?
Interlock paving and poured concrete suit different jobs, and the site, the load and the look decide. Both are priced by area and depend on the base underneath.
- Repair: a sunken or damaged interlock block is lifted and relaid on its own. A cracked concrete slab is repaired by patching or cutting out the damaged area.
- Joints: interlock has joints between the blocks, which let the surface move slightly with the ground. Concrete is one continuous slab with cut joints.
- Look: interlock comes in colours and patterns. Poured concrete gives a plain, continuous surface.
- Drainage: both need a fall. Interlock joints allow some water to pass between the blocks, and the base carries it away.
