Advantages of Interlocking Paving

Updated October 2026

Interlocking paving is one of the most common surfaces for paths, patios and driveways in Dubai villas. The blocks are laid on a compacted base and a sand bed, and the joints lock them together. This guide explains the main advantages, the limits, and how interlock compares with poured concrete and outdoor tiles.

The main advantages of interlocking paving

1. Easy repair

Each block is separate. If one sinks, cracks or is stained, it can be lifted, the base corrected and the block relaid. The rest of the surface stays in place, and the repair blends in.

2. It moves with the ground

The joints let the surface flex slightly as the ground settles. A poured slab is one rigid piece, so the same movement shows as cracks.

3. Strong under load

With the right thickness and base, interlock carries foot traffic and vehicles. Thicker blocks and a deeper base are used for driveways.

4. Choice of colour and pattern

Blocks come in many colours, shapes and finishes, and patterns such as herringbone, basket weave and running bond change the look of the same block.

5. Ready to use quickly

Interlock has no curing time. Once the joints are filled and the surface compacted, it can be walked on.

6. Access to services

Pipes and cables under paving can be reached by lifting blocks and relaying them afterwards, instead of breaking out a slab.

The honest limits

  • The base decides everything: a weak or thin base lets blocks sink and rock
  • Joints need care: sand can wash out and weeds can take hold if joints are not kept filled
  • Edges need restraint: without edging the outer blocks spread
  • Heat: dark blocks get hot in the Dubai summer, so lighter colours suit seating areas

  • Driveways and parking, with thicker blocks and a deeper base
  • Pool surrounds and courtyards, with a fall away from the pool and the villa
